Medusa was originally a beautiful mortal woman who was cursed by Athena after being violated by Poseidon in her temple, transforming her into a monster with snakes for hair and a gaze that turned people to stone. She was ultimately beheaded by the hero Perseus, who used her head as a weapon before giving it to Athena, who placed it on her shield. Medusa's story reflects themes of victimization and transformation.
